Tiago Pinto: ‘Dzeko no longer Roma captain’

Tiago Pinto confirms he met Edin Dzeko and Paulo Fonseca and reveals the Giallorossi are not continuing with the Bosnian as captain.

Dzeko had had disagreements with Paulo Fonseca and had been training separately from the rest of the group at the end of January when he came close to joining Inter in a swap deal with Alexis Sanchez.

He returned to group training yesterday and today he met Paulo Fonseca after the training session in Trigoria.

New Roma General Manager Tiago Pinto explained what happened at a press conference.

“I don’t want to find an escape route, it’s important to understand that inside a club there are the dynamics that similar to those of  families and families become stronger by solving their problems,” the Roma director said.

“Edin is a strong footballer, a great professional with great experience and personality and Fonseca is the leader of our project, he’s done a great job and he is the right person to build the future of the club,” Tiago Pinto said.

“Over the last few days, we’ve had meetings together in order to strengthen mutual trust. We came out happy and confident, now we must focus on the collective good which is more important than the interest of individuals.”

Will Roma continue with Dzeko as captain?

“I am convinced a club must be based on rules, right now Edin is not the captain, but we are working for the club’s good and Dzeko will be the first one to work for this.”

Who will the next captain be?

“It’s  a strategic choice that involves the coach and the club. It must be a shared decision. However, the coach is free to make his tactical decisions, obviously nobody from the club will interfere.”

During the press conference, the Portuguese director denied reports of a meeting with Massimiliano Allegri in January.
