Resignation and confusion around Diawara error

More details are emerging about the chaos caused by Roma’s error registering Amadou Diawara, with reports secretary general Pantaleo Longo has resigned.

Diawara played in the opening Serie A 0-0 draw with Hellas Verona, but the midfielder was not included in the squad list.

He was still in the Under-22 list of players, but turned 23 on July 17, so was no longer eligible for that group.

Sky Sport Italia claim Roma were alerted to the problem by automatic software set up by the Lega Serie A.

At this point, Roma insist they contacted the authorities and were told it was a technical error, so they shouldn’t worry about it.

On the other hand, the Lega Serie A maintain they told the club Diawara had to be registered in the correct list or he could not play.

Because of this, Siamolaroma.it are reporting this evening that secretary general Longo has offered his resignation.

Roma genuinely risk having the 0-0 result scrapped and a 3-0 victory handed to Verona for irregularly fielding Diawara.

The Giallorossi could argue their case that the error made no material difference, because there were still four empty slots in the Over-22 list of players, so Diawara did not take up a place that otherwise wouldn’t have been available.
