Fonseca: ‘Roma approach won’t change’

Paulo Fonseca insists Roma’s general approach ‘will not change’ despite starting Borja Mayoral in place of COVID case Edin Dzeko against Genoa.

It kicks off on Sunday at 14.00 GMT, click here for a match preview.

This will be the first game since hitman Dzeko tested positive for COVID-19, leaving limited options upfront.

“Dzeko and Borja Mayoral have different characteristics, and we all know how important Edin is for this team, but as far as I am concerned the general approach of the team will not change,” said the coach in his press conference.

“We must realise that Serie A is a different league to most others. Pedro Rodriguez can adapt quickly, as he has so much experience, but it’s not the same situation for a young player like Mayoral, Carles Perez or Gonzalo Villar. We must give them time to grow.”

Roma swept CFR Cluj aside 5-0 in the Europa League on Thursday, confirming their good recent form.

“I want my team to show courage and play the ball even when being pressed. Even if there is a mistake, I am satisfied with the courage of my players to try playing it out from the back.

“It’s not just the defence that has changed, but the way the whole team works to help defend. If we don’t press well further up the field, it becomes very difficult for the defenders.

“We’re on the right track, but nowhere near finished yet and we must continue with this team spirit tomorrow.”

Roma are set to appeal against the 3-0 defeat to Verona, awarded due to Amadou Diawara being registered in the Under-23 list after his birthday.

“I think people realised it was an error that we did not gain any advantage from, so I am hopeful.”
