Conte: ‘Inter will honour the championship’

Inter coach Antonio Conte said his players will continue to ‘honour the championship’, despite having already secured the Scudetto.

The Nerazzurri face Roma tomorrow and the first leg ended in a 2-2 draw, but Conte was pleased with the last performance against the Giallorossi.

“In Rome, we played a very good game,” he told InterTV. “There was regret in the end, when they equalised from a corner when we weren’t ready, and they were clever to kick it immediately.

“The performance was excellent, against an excellent team like Roma.”

Inter celebrated their 19th Scudetto with a 5-1 win over Sampdoria last time and Conte expects his men to continue with maximum intensity.

“The target is to always look for the best in all games,” he said. “To be focused for 90 minutes plus stoppages.

“I think the lads did very well against Sampdoria and I congratulated them, because I saw some wonderful plays. Things we had tried to in training and I’m happy that despite numerous changes, we managed to get this result.

“It was an excellent performance thanks to these lads, who have an undisputed professionalism.”

Conte said he’s not prepared to let his players take the foot off the accelerator and wants to ‘honour the championship’ until the end.

“Absolutely, because it’s right to honour this successful championship in the best possible way,” he continued. “Therefore, we try to play all games with great seriousness and professionalism.

“As I said, victory must be fixed in our brains, so there are three games left, even with important teams, we want to honour the Scudetto and give our best on the pitch.”

Conte said he expects a Roma who have ‘no intention’ of giving up, despite sitting seventh in Serie A.

“Roma are an excellent team, so we expect a team that want to finish the season in the best possible way,” he said.

“They are an excellent team led by an excellent coach like Fonseca, so we expect a good match.

“In my two seasons we only made draws against Roma and this is the testimony that there has been and there will be a lot of balance.”
