Verona assistant manager Matteo Paro, standing in for suspended Ivan Juric, explains the importance of tempo and pressing after a draw with Roma.
Hellas hit the woodwork twice with Adrien Tameze and Federico Dimarco, while Leonardo Spinazzola also rattled the bar for Roma in the 0-0 draw.
“We were up against a very strong team and naturally struggled at the start, as their combination play was making it difficult for us to close them down,” Paro told DAZN.
“In the second half, we got a handle on the situation and created several scoring opportunities. Pressing is important and when you have players like those at Roma, you give them two metres of space, you’ll never see the ball again. So we had to step up the tempo and force them to rush their passes. We knew that when it came to duels and the second ball, we’d make the difference.”
The fitness levels of the Verona squad were also impressive, as they got stronger the more the game went on.
“In order to attack and play the way we do, you need to be really in great physical shape. I won’t say it’s better or worse than any other methods of training, it’s just our particular approach.
“I worked with Gian Piero Gasperini and Juric, they have the same general vision of football, albeit with some subtle differences. I think they are showing how good they are.”
